Henriette Huldisch. The Beauty of Impossibility: the Whitney Biennial 2008
18.00 Wednesday 8 October
'Vilnius - European Culture Capital 2009' event

Biennials shoulder the paradoxical premise of encapsulating a uniform and exhaustive picture of contemporary art – at a moment when there is more contemporary art being produced than ever. The Whitney Biennial is a two yearly survey of 'American Art' (that is the focus of the Whitney Museum); which is a narrowing of concern that still presents a myriad of challenges considering that New York, where the museum is located and the biennial takes place, is one of the centres of contemporary art production, populated with artists from all over the world. In the last biennial (2006) two international curators explored the expanded parameters of American art production while in the 2008 version curators Henriette Huldisch and Shamim M. Momin developed a biennial focused on 'lessness' and an exploration of the 'networks' constitutive of current art production.

Henriette Huldisch is a curator and writer based in Berlin and New York. From 2001-2008 she worked at the Whitney Museum of American Art, where she co-curated (with Shamim M. Momin) the 2008 Whitney Biennial Exhibition and Full House: Views of the Whitney’s Collection at 75 (2006). Previously she curated the retrospective of films by Robert Beavers and the exhibition Small: The Object in Film, Video, and Slide Installation, with the work of Sol LeWitt, Jonathan Monk, and Michael Snow, among others. She also oversaw the installation of Summer of Love: Art of the Psychedelic Era at the Whitney in 2007. Huldisch has published essays and interviews in Artforum, North Drive Press, and Collecting the New: Museums and Contemporary Art, as well as numerous Whitney Museum publications.

As part of the CODE SHARE exhibition (2009) the CAC will be presenting the work of Whitney Biennial artists Edgar Arceneaux, Matthew Brannon, and Harry Dodge & Stanya Kahn
